How Nuclear Submarine are Made

A nuclear submarine is a ship powered by atomic energy that travels primarily under-water, but also on the surface of the ocean. Previously, conventional submarines used diesel engines that required air for moving on the surface of the water, and battery-powered electric motors for moving beneath it. The limited lifetime of electric batteries meant that even the most advanced conventional submarine could only remained submerged for a few days at slow speed, and only a few hours at top speed. On the other hand, nuclear submarines can remain under-water for several months. This ability, combined with advanced weapons technology, makes nuclear submarines one of the most useful warships ever built.

South West forces 'vital' as deterrent

The importance of the South West's Royal Navy and Royal Marines to the future defence of the UK has been highlighted in a new report.

The document was drawn up by retired admirals and security consultants to lobby senior politicians ahead of the forthcoming strategic defence review.

The Ministry of Defence has said a formal consultation will begin next year

With 95% of UK trade moved by sea, one of the biggest threats is disruption of shipping, the report found.

It said deterrence was vital and warned against constraining core capabilities.

Hunter on list for submarine base

NEWCASTLE Port could become a second Garden Island, home to six submarines and a highly skilled maintenance workforce under ambitious new plans from the NSW Government.

Attending yesterday's Pacific 2010 International Maritime Conference, Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay said the NSW Government would investigate the potential for the Port of Newcastle to become a defence industry hub, as NSW goes after its share of the Commonwealth's $300 billion defence budget.

The Royal Australian Navy is expected to upgrade its equipment, with 12 new submarines to replace the current six Collins Class submarines, under plans outlined in the Defence White Paper.

Premier Kristina Keneally said NSW would try to gain work for sites in Sydney, Newcastle and Nowra.

The navy already has bases at Garden Island in Sydney Harbour and an air station at HMAS Albatross at Nowra.

NSW Defence Industry Advisor John Blackburn said Newcastle had strong capabilities.

"The navy is keen to look for an East Coast base," Mr Blackburn said.

Raytheon introduces GPS-guided torpedo kit

A wing kit that adds satellite guidance to torpedoes dropped from aircraft is among the latest technologies that Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems is marketing to international customers.
Raytheon's Fish Hawk wing kit - which the company is showing off this week at the Singapore Airshow - is designed to fit on Raytheon's MK-54 lightweight torpedo, which is dropped from anti-submarine warfare aircraft.

The kit guides the torpedo to a target area with a GPS satellite and inertial navigation system and targeting information from an aircraft controller.

Once the system descends to a specific location at lower altitude and speed, the wing kit releases the torpedo, and a small parachute deploys to slow down the torpedo for water entry, according to Raytheon.

After it enters the water, onboard inertial systems and sonar guide the torpedo to the submarine target.
Fish Hawk is being developed by Raytheon for the U.S. Navy's High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapons Concept, a program aimed at developing better systems to counter submarines from the skies.

The Fish Hawk was built from the ground up for the Navy's next-generation patrol and anti-sub plane, Boeing's P-8 Poseidon, Mark Borup, Raytheon's Fish Hawk business development manager, said in prepared remarks.

"Unlike other legacy torpedo wing kits that have been redesigned to fit in the P-8, Fish Hawk is purpose-built for the Poseidon, using combat-proven technology," Borup said, citing a successful flight test of the guidance system in 2008.

The Fish Hawk would give the U.S. allies in the Asia-Pacific region the capability to deploy torpedoes safely from extended ranges, added Borup, who was in Singapore Wednesday.

Lockheed Martin Corp. is developing its own high-altitude torpedo guidance kit, known as the LongShot, to meet the Navy's requirements.

The Navy expects to award a development contract for the torpedo guidance kit specifically for the P-8 Poseidon sometime this year, says a Navy request for information from potential contractors issued in July.

Navy plans to buy two more subs in 2011; cost of Ford carrier rises 6.3 percent

Northrop Grumman Corp. and Virginia's congressional delegation got their wish this week, as the Navy announced it is seeking to buy two attack submarines next year for the first time since the early 1990s.

The Navy requested $5.1 billion as part of President Barack Obama's $708 billion defense budget to double the production rate of Virginia-class submarines beginning in 2011.

Built jointly by Northrop's Newport News shipyard and General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., the subs had been the subject of speculation in Washington for the past few months about whether the sea service would try to save money in the short term by delaying the ramp-up in production.

Members of Congress and industry officials have lobbied for years to increase the submarine production rate, arguing that higher build rates translate into bottom-line savings and help preserve the jobs of skilled workers in the industrial shipbuilding base.

The money requested would go to fund two subs in fiscal 2011, the advanced procurement of components for two subs in 2012 and 2013 and additional money for research and development. Those six subs are expected to enter the active fleet between August 2016 and February 2019.

The Navy's 2011 proposed shipbuilding budget, released Monday, also shows that the estimated cost to build the next-generation aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Ford, increased $685 million — or 6.3 percent — over a one-year period.

The Newport News-built carrier, which was christened in late 2008 and is due to be complete in 2015, now is estimated to cost $11.53 billion, compared with a $10.85 billion estimate in the Navy's fiscal 2010 budget.

More than half the cost escalation, or about $350 million, was under a line item labeled "Plan Costs," according to budget documents.

Navy maintains the unidentified object not Chinese submarine

Commander says the object does not dive rapidly to escape detection, but continues on its course.

The Navy said yesterday the unidentified object spotted under water near its top base last week was not a Chinese submarine or a sea mammal.

A newspaper reported Sunday that an anti-submarine helicopter found a submarine within Taiwanese territorial waters near the naval base of Tsoying during military maneuvers on Jan. 27. As soon as the Navy called on the submarine to identify itself, it fled out of the area without responding, leading to suspicions it came from China, the reports said.

The Navy denied the report, saying sonar showed up an unidentified object which could not have been a submarine.

Yesterday, 168th Fleet Commander Lee Tung-fang said the object did not dive rapidly to escape detection, but continued on its course at a speed of 2 nautical miles an hour. The data told the Navy that there were no submarines, whales, dolphins or sunken ships involved, Lee said.

The 168th fleet had originally been patrolling off Taiwan's east coast, but was called to the area off Kaohsiung's Tsoying base to participate in anti-submarine drills, he said.

The area in the Taiwan Straits was difficult terrain for finding submarines, the senior officer told reporters. His unit had previous experience with locating underwater objects inside Taiwanese territorial waters which later turned up not to be submarines, according to Lee.

Taiwan wants more U.S. weapons despite latest sales

Far from being satisfied with a $6.4 billion arms package proposed by Washington last week, Taiwan said on Wednesday it wants more weapons, and more advanced ones at that, a move sure to further infuriate China.

Taiwan, which has seen its military superiority over China gradually slip over the past few years on the back of a massive rise in Chinese defence spending, urgently wants to get its hands on advanced F-16 fighter jets and submarines.

U.S. officials have given no clear signals about when that equipment may arrive. Washington may hold off given China's strident reaction to Friday's package, which included a more modest offering of Patriot missiles and Black Hawk helicopters.

Sino-U.S. relations are already tense due to a series of other spats over the value of China's currency, trade protectionism and Internet freedoms.

"We hope for the F-16s. We're still asking about submarines. Although relations have improved with mainland China, Taiwan still needs its own defensive power," said Tony Wang, spokesman for Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou. "We need a sense of security."

Taiwan's current submarine fleet of four includes two boats built during World War Two which go to sea complete with some of their original brass fittings. China, by contrast, has more than 60 submarines and a rapidly modernising surface fleet.

Penyusunan Kualifikasi Kapal Selam TNI AL Selesai

"Kebutuhan kapal selam baru dua unit. Kenapa lambat?

Navy to get Russian nuke submarine before July

New Delhi, Feb 1 (IANS) The Indian Navy will get the Russian-built nuclear-powered Akula-II class attack submarine on a 10-year lease before July this year, a naval official said Monday.

The submarine, which would primarily be used to train crews to operate these kind of vessel, is considered one of the quietest and deadliest among Russian nuclear submarine fleet.

“The submarine is coming and it will arrive by mid-year before July,” a senior Indian Navy official said, requesting anonymity.

Partly financed by India under a deal signed with Russia in January 2004, the 12,000-tonne submarine was been built at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur shipyard in Russia. It will be commissioned into the Indian Navy as INS Chakra.

According to experts, INS Chakra would help India fill the void caused by the delays in the indigenous Advanced Technology Vessel project to build a nuclear powered attack submarine capable of firing missiles.

Three Indian navy teams have already been trained at the specially set up training centre in Sosnovy Bor near St. Petersburg.

Submarine intrusion or navy incompetence

The navy denied a news report Sunday that its anti-submarine helicopters, during a training drill on Jan. 27, had detected a Chinese submarine at an underwater location 24 miles southeast of Taiwan's Zuoying naval base.

Hsia Te-yu, political warfare chief of the Navy Command, explained Jan. 30 that after close observation and verification based on standard operating procedures, the navy concluded that the object was in fact not a submarine.

According to the news report, the vessels involved in the training drill immediately went on alert after they determined that the object was a submarine and that it had not responded to the signals it was sent. The submarine left the area soon after it was spotted, the report said.
The following are excerpts from local media coverage of the issue:
China Times:
The navy said that submarines from non-hostile nations usually notify Taiwan if they plan to pass through Taiwan's territorial waters, or at least they would respond to inquiry signals.

DARPA pushes submarine laser communications technology for ASW operations

communications experts at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., are asking industry to develop a blue-spectrum submarine laser communications system able to link submerged submarines with nearby aircraft for anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

The Los Angeles class fast-attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768)

DARPA issued a broad agency announcement Friday (DARPA-BAA-10-25) for the Tactical Relay Information Network (TRITON) research program to develop a blue-laser submarine communications system quickly enough to test during the U.S. Navy Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise in June 2012.

The submarine laser communications prototype must meet Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6), should help DARPA scientists validate improvements in blue lasers, and must demonstrate this technology's ability to link submarines and aircraft while the submarines are submerged and underway.

The TRITON project is to build on technology DARPA developed in the 1990s under the Tactical Airborne Laser Communications (TALC), which tested blue-green laser communications to link submerged submarines with Navy P-3 maritime patrol aircraft. TALC matched a blue laser to a cesium atomic line resonance receiver at 455.6 microns; the downlink was a green diode-pumped laser compatible with existing submarine receivers at 532 microns.

DPP calls on government to strive to obtain submarine and F16

Democratic Progressive Party Spokesman Tsai Chi-chang Monday called on the government to continue the effort to include F16C/D and submarine into the newly weapon sales promised by the US government, according to news report.

“Ma Administration should be cautious about every step to win Taiwan the best strategic position and the best possible benefit,” the local Central News Agency quoted DPP Legislative Chai Trong-rong as saying.

F-16C/D fighter jet and submarine have been long sought by Taiwan military. But they are currently not listed within the weapon sale, totaling to US$6.4 billion, declared by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) last Saturday.

The proposed arms sale include 114 Patriot missiles, 60 Black Hawk helicopters, communication equipment, 2 Osprey mine-hunting ships and 12 Harpoon missiles, according to DSCA.

Meanwhile, as Navy denied a Chinese submarine founded near its Zuoying base yesterday, the DPP urged the government to reinforce coastal defense.(source etaiwannews.com)
